178 imagesBurlesque first flourished during the American Depression, and in the current political climate it's no surprise that its experiencing something of a major rivival. Burlesque Undressed, a film about burlesque star Imodesty Blaize was released in cinemas in January 2010 and currently in production is a major Hollywood film entitled Burlesque starring Christina Aguilera and Cher. Unlike the classic burlesque of old, Neo burlesque as its known aims to raise awareness of female stereotypes. The routines are inventive and play with stereotypical gender roles. The performers are intelligent women, often professionals such as teachers or nurses. Many of today's dancers are not what would be considered the perfect beauty as depicted in today's fashion magazines. Modern burlesque audiences are as lightly to contain women as well as men these days, it is increasingly emerging that audiences identify with the performers rather than objectifying them, hence the audience are often dressed up to emulate the performers costumes. Burlesque clubs and classes are appearing all over the country, and while the neo-burlesque movement is strongest in the UK and the US interest in burlesque is growing worldwide.

20 imagesKilo Sepuluh is 10 kilometers outside the town of Timka (hence the name) in West Papua. Kadun Jaya, as Kilo Sepuluh is officially known, houses 380 prostitutes..In 2000 the village did not exist. Before that time the prostitutes could be found in Tamika itself. The Freeport mining company wanted to make prostitution less accessible, because many of their mostly male employees, were spending time at the brothels in Timika and not returning to work. So the prostituses from Timika were brought to Kilo Sepuluh, and the local government pays local brothel owners to manage the village.

124 imagesThe Mentawai tribe of Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai islands have maintained much of their traditional way of life despite great pressure from the modern world. That pressure is now set to increase as the Indonesian government plans to turn 20,000 hectares of their land in to palm oil plantations, this will have devastating consequences on the Mentawai's traditional way of life. The Indonesian government has already relocated many of the Mentawai in to government villages. But some are refusing to leave their traditional lives for the uncertain future in the villages, preferring the now uncertain future in the forest that has been their home for thousands of years.

26 imagesLander Kerrapo looks after the clinic in wangamalo, it was started in 2004 by Rita Pademala and although Rita has now left Wangamalo, Lander has learned enough medical skills from Rita to be able to run the clinic succesfully with the help of seven other men from wangamalo. Wangamalo is in the remote jungle of West Papua, Indonesia. First set up in the !970's by Christian missionaries it is home to the Korowai tribe many of whom also inhabit treetop homes built high in the canopy of the forest surrounding Wangamalo. Many Korowai, who originally moved to the government village, have now moved back to the forest where the sago palms, the staple diet are more plentiful. But the clinic here still provides an important service being the only source of medical care for at least 300 miles, and with no roads to access Wangamalo it would be 300 miles you would have to walk.

61 imagesIn the small town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, there is a remarkable salt mine, it is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites, and deservedly so. Salt has been mined here, beginning in the 13th century and continuing uninterrupted until 1996. The mine is vast, over 200km in length on 9 different levels of between 60m and 300m below ground. With over 2000 chambers carved out of the rock salt. What makes the mine so special though, apart from it's huge size and age is that it houses within it one of the wonders of Poland. One hundred metres below the surface in the heart of the mine is The Chapel of the Blessed Kinga, the chapel carved in 1896 entirely out of the rock salt by the miners themselves, is over 50m long and has within it statues, sculptures and bas-reliefs, all carved from the salt, even the chandeliers that hang in the chapel are made from the rock salt. Although the Chapel of St Kinga is undoubtedly the "piece de resistance", the tour begins with the decent in to the mine, down some 387 wooden steps, though fortunately the ascent at the end of the tour is via a lift. Visitors are taken on a 3 km guided tour. This is a very small percentage of the total mine so it's important to keep up with the guide as it's very easy to get lost in the many labyrinthine passages. The guides do tend to move at a fairly fast pace with little time to linger. Some guides may suggest that you lick the walls - I tried this but it wasn't as salty as I expected. Visitors are led through the many corridors, chambers and chapels including the 17th century chapel dedicated to St Anthony and the Kunegunda gallery with its model Neolithic village. A visit to the Wieliczka Mine is a visit that's well worth its salt.
